Race Info

The event is invite only

Hyde County in the summer is miserable, mostly because of the pests, heat, humidity and biting insects

Typically the hottest 2 weeks at Mattamuskeet are the last week of July

and the first week of August

The perfect time for a death march

Potential entrants “Virgins” are invited by veterans only, and are required to complete an entrance exam to apply. Completion of the entrance exam is not a guarantee of entry, it is simply an application. Entry is permitted solely at the discretion of the RD

Veterans and virgins all carry a standard 100 cartridge, .50 caliber ammo can (M2A1 .50 Cal) which must be carried on their person, in some fashion, at all times while making forward progress

It cannot be altered or damaged in any way

All virgins are subject to “virgin runner hazing” an MdM right of passage

An empty ammo can weighs slightly more than 5 pounds, while not heavy you may find it awkward and annoying, frankly, that’s this point

More about the M2A1 ammo can

Participants at MdM receive a custom designed ammo can personalized by the Wilson’s

Once an ammo can is customized for a participant and a number is painted on the number is forever retired

Your MdM can number is your number for life

Vets with ammo cans are asked to bring them back to future events to be carried again

Each subsequent carry of an ammo can will result in a “notch” being hand painted on the lid upon finishing

Carrying the ammo can may be waived in certain circumstances solely at the RD’s discretion
When a carry is waived for a participant their can will make a lap of the lake PERIOD

No finish is recognized without the can making a lap of the lake even if a carry is waived

Double Death March

Lap 1 will start at in front of Carawan’s Motel on the south side of the lake on Friday, August 9th at High Noon

The 1st lap will be run in reverse finishing at Fairfield Cemetery

You will be required to carry your original MdM can for both laps; it can be carried in the manner of your choosing but cannot be altered in any way. This can is subject to 1st year runner hazing even for veterans for the duration of both laps

Lap 2 will start at the Fairfield Cemetery with all other MdM participants at 9am Saturday August 10th. Failure to make the start of Lap 2 with all other MdM participants will result in immediate disqualification

You will be required to HAND CARRY an additional standard green ammo can in addition to your original can for the duration of Lap 2. Can 2 may, or may not be hazed as well

Lap 2 must be finished no later than 7am Sunday August 11th

The double is an extreme challenge and is designed to be a “man breaker”. It has not yet been completed completely within the rules as outlined above. Below is a photo example of the last attempt of a double
